MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – Google announced today that Google Docs now supports Markdown formatting. This new feature lets users apply styles using simple keyboard shortcuts. Users can type symbols to format text instantly. This change aims to speed up document creation.

Markdown is popular among developers and writers. It uses characters like asterisks and hashtags. Typing **bold** makes text bold. Typing # heading creates a heading. Users do not need to click toolbar buttons anymore. This method feels familiar to many people.

The update is rolling out globally. It works for all personal Google accounts. Users can access it immediately. The feature supports common Markdown elements. These include headings, bold, italic, lists, links, blockquotes, and code blocks. Google Docs converts the Markdown into formatted text automatically. Users see the formatted result as they type.

Google expects this will save time. People can focus on writing. They spend less time adjusting styles manually. The company believes Markdown support meets user requests. Many people asked for simpler ways to format documents.

A Google spokesperson explained the move. “We know users want efficiency. Markdown offers a fast, keyboard-focused way to work. This update makes Docs more flexible. It helps users who prefer typing over clicking.” The feature integrates smoothly with existing Docs functions. Existing documents work as normal. Users can choose whether to use Markdown or the traditional toolbar.

The support includes these key formatting options:
* Headings: Type #, ##, or ### followed by space.
* Bold: Type **text**.
* Italic: Type *text*.
* Numbered Lists: Type 1. followed by space.
* Bulleted Lists: Type – or * followed by space.
* Links: Type [text](URL).
* Blockquotes: Type > followed by space.
