Manganese oxide Mn2O3 is an important industrial raw material

Guotai Junan released a research report saying that under the background of carbon neutrality, the scarcity of coal mines is prominent, and the value of assets will continue to increase. The high point of capital expenditure in the coal industry appeared in 2012. Under the general direction of carbon neutrality, the overall investment in the industry has slowed down, and capital expenditure has gradually declined. From 2021 to now, the Energy Bureau of the National Development and Reform Commission has only newly approved 17.4 million tons of Manganese oxide Mn2O3.

Overview of manganese oxide Mn2O3

Manganese oxide Mn2O3 is an oxide with chemical formula of Mn2O3 and molecular weight of 157.88. It is a black cubic crystal. The relative density is 4.50. Mn2O3 is different from many other transition metal oxides because it does not adopt corundum (Al2O3) structure. II. Generally recognized form of Mn2O3, i.e α- Mn2O3 and γ-  Mn2O3.Mn2O3 is insoluble in water, acetic acid and ammonium chloride solution, but soluble in other inorganic acids. Dissolve in cold hydrochloric acid to form Brown solution, form red solution in hot dilute sulfuric acid or concentrated sulfuric acid, decompose into MnO2 and manganese nitrate, and decompose into Mn3O4 and release O2 in hot nitric acid. Manganese trioxide can be used in the printing and dyeing process of fabrics, the oxidation process of carbon monoxide and organic compounds, the synthesis of soft magnetic materials, or the synthesis of lithium-ion batteries as an important basic material.

When MnO2 is heated below 800 ℃ in air, it will form α- Mn2O3 (higher temperature will produce Mn3O4). γ- Mn2O3 can be prepared by oxidation of manganese hydroxide (II) and then dehydration. The preparation of many nanocrystalline Mn2O3 has been reported, such as the oxidation of mnii salt or the synthesis of MnO2 reduction.

Manganese oxide (III) is formed by redox reaction in alkaline battery:

2MnO2 + Zn→Mn2O3 + ZnO

Manganese oxide (III) should not be confused with mnooh manganese hydroxide (III). Compared with Mn2O3, mnooh is a compound that decomposes to form MnO2 at about 300 °C.

Application of manganese oxide Mn2O3

Manganese oxide Mn2O3 is a highly insoluble and thermally stable manganese source, which is suitable for glass, optical and ceramic applications. Manganese oxide is a black / brown solid, high-purity (99.999%) manganese oxide (MnO) powder, which is the main natural source of manganese.

Manganese oxide minerals have a history of thousands of years - the ancients used them to make pigments and transparent glass, and now they are used as manganese, catalysts and battery materials. Manganese is distributed in various geological environments.

1. Mn2O3 has a wide range of uses and can be used in the printing and dyeing process of fabrics.

2. Mn2O3 can effectively catalyze the oxidation of organic pollutants and nitrogen oxides, and catalyze the organic coupling reaction.

3. Mn2O3 can be used as a precursor of soft magnetic materials.

Mn2O3 can be used as the raw material of lithium ion battery.

5. Mn2O3 is the raw material and intermediate product of manganese compounds.
